HR Case Study: Cognos makes full use of internship program (2000)

Cognos successfully maximizes an internship program when skilled workers do not meet the market demand.
Cognos assigns hired interns more important duties such as operating a 3D modeling application, programming visualizing software and handling client/server issues.

Quotes from Rob Ashe, (Then) Senior VP, Customer Service and Support, Cognos (Current President and CEO)

"We once hired up to 75 interns. And we try to give interns more opportunities in core fields such as IT and R&D."
((Many interns become a full-time employee when an internship program ends.))

"Employees are an important asset in Cognos. Therefore, it is a significant investment to hire workers and develop their career."
((Rob Ashe himself was first hired as an intern in Accounting Department of Cognos.))

"Cognos solutions are globally proven in technology, quality, convenience and customer service."

Quotes of Les Rechan, COO, HQ, Cognos: (in Seoul)

"Corporate Performance Management (CPM) became an essential solution for companies' effective, speedy decision making."

"More than 80% of Cognos' customers are satisfied with increased efficiency of works and improved profitability by the Cognos CPM solution.

Les Rechan's interview by a local press:
(( ***unofficial translation ))

Q: Why does Cognos set up an official, separate office despite a local partner has successfully provided Cognos solutions?
A: Cognos' customer base in Korea is getting larger. Through Korean operations, Cognos will be able to provide direct support to increasing number of large size customers in Korea.

Q: What is the differenciated feature of Cognos CPM solution compared to that of Hyperion which entered into Korea earlier than Cognos.
A: Hyperion CPM solution is based on finances while Cognos solution is based on BI platform. Gartner proved that Cognos is the only one who provides a single platform integrating BI and enterprise planning.

Q: What do you think about the rumor that big vendors such as IBM and Oracle might acquire global BI providers (Hyperion, Cognos, Business Objects)?
A: Our strength is we are competitive in both BI and CPM. Cognos was named the leader in both BI and CPM in Gartner's Magic Quadrant.

Q: There is a shortage of skilled BI consultants in Korea. Does Cognos have a resolution on this issue?
A: I have made special efforts in global service at Cognos. First, I created Cognos Academy. And Cognos has 2 performance blue prints per industry. We will share these with our partners and support SI vendors with the resource.

My ideas on Korean operations for Cognos

1) For local sales and marketing, provide more global best practices (references) of Cognos to local businesses
a. Korean firms have needs of globally proven IT solutions with more direct resources (services) and support from Cognos HQ when they choose an IT solution
b. Increase the recognition of Cognos solutions, publishing and distributing more local success cases on industry journals and news
: In the longer-term, local successful cases based on Cognos solutions would be appealing to firms in others countries. (Especially to Chinese ones who have some similarity in business conditions.) Many Korean firms lead in implementing emerging enterprise IT solutions in the Asia Pacific region.
*** However, Korean firms are not very active in publishing their cases. (Sincere persuasion is needed.)

2) Strengthen local partnership
- Improve customers' satisfaction on quality of projects with more intensive collaboration b/w local partners and Cognos HQ (sharing relevant resources)
- Find more local partners who specialize in various industries and manage the relationship

Press coverage: Interview with President Yoon of Cognos Korea

Interview with Yoon, Jae-young, Network Times, Dec. 2006 (in Korean)
(( ***unofficial translation ))

"Confident of leading the Korean market with globally recognized customer service of Cognos"

"Cognos will actively expand our share in the Korean CPM market which is in the blooming season."

"CPM solution is an essential trend of enterprise software. CPM enables corporations to make effective, quick decisions."

"Corporations that applied CPM in a partial function have needs of expaning the CPM implementation to the entire company.

"Regarding our new local partners, Virmuda has a strength in retail and finance sectors while HandySoft, no.1 BPM vendor in Korea, could contribute to creating synergy with Cognos BI and CPM.
